Affiliate Marketing For Writers

on April 30, 2012

Thanks to Jon Rhodes for writing this blog post. Affiliate marketing is one way that writers can make significant income, and Jon is nice enough to share a small fraction of what he has learned about it here. If you want to learn more about affiliate marketing, which is one of my goals for this year, you should definitely spend some time checking out his website.

Affiliate marketing opens up a load of possibilities for writers to make money online. This article will explain a bit about what affiliate marketing is, and how it can be used by writers to earn money online.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is where you sell products that other people have created, in return for a percentage commission. So for example you may sell an e book someone else has written for a 50% commission. You don’t need to worry about buying stock, processing orders, or delivery. This is all sorted out automatically for you. You can literally make sales whilst in your sleep!

Affiliate products can be either tangible (physical) or non tangible (digital). Tangible products usually sell more readily, but give far smaller commissions due to costs of production and postage. Non tangible products give far higher commissions. It’s not unheard of to receive as much as 75%.

How Does It Work?

Most affiliate programmes are run through a third party, such as Clickbank or E Junkie. You sign up for an account, and get a product link that is unique to both you and the particular product that you wish to sell. You can put this link on your website, blog, Facebook account etc. If anyone clicks on this link, then makes a purchase, you are automatically credited with a percentage of the sale. Some affiliate programmes have their own affiliate software. This is usually referred to as an ‘in house’ affiliate programme.

How Can Writers Make Money With This?

There are several ways. Here are some of them…

Set up a website or blog
You can set up your own website or blog. The general idea here is that you provide great content that people will want to read. It could be informative, educational, amusing, whatever. As long as people will find some value in it, then there is money to be made. With consistent production of quality content, you can attract a loyal following of readers, that feel like they know and trust you. This takes some time and effort, but eventually you can recommend products to your visitors, and earn a percentage on every sale that you make. With the trust and good will that you create by giving away quality content, you are more likely to make sales. I have written posts on how to set up a blog, and how to set up a website, which may help you if you decide to follow this route.

Create an e book
Another great way to make money is to write your own e book. Of course it should be in a topic that you are both knowledgeable and passionate about, but there must also be a demand if you wish to make money. You could always check out the best sellers on Amazon to get a flavour of what is currently demanded.

You then have a choice, you can either sell the e book, or give it away.

If you decide to sell the e book, then you may wish to sell it on your own website blog. However this is not essential. You can add it to affiliate networks and let other people sell if for you for a percentage commission. You will then be what is described as an affiliate marketing vendor.

If you decide to give the book away, you can make money by placing affiliate links within the book. Don’t go overboard. Only sprinkle a few here and there, and make sure they are quality products that are useful and relevant to what you are writing about. You can then give away this book on your own website or blog. Instead, or additionally, you can contact webmasters in relevant niches and let them give away your book to their visitors as well. If your book is well written and useful, then many will be willing to give it away for you. They keep their visitors happy with free material, and you stand the chance of making some cash should they click on your affiliate links and make purchases.

Write for other websites
You can provide content for other websites for free. In return you can place an affiliate link or two within the body, or at the end with a small bio. Be careful though, as some sites don’t allow affiliate links, so check this out first, or you may find yourself banned. Squidoo is one site that does allow you to add affiliate links.

Final Thoughts

There are many opportunities for writers to make money online through affiliate marketing. The secret is to write great content, whether you are selling it or giving it away for free. Then you must find a way of distributing it, and getting this valuable resource out there to as many people as you can. The more value you put out there to the more people, then the more you stand to earn. Look at it as good karma – the more you provide to more people, the more you stand to get in return.

Good introduction to affiliate marketing! Are there any particular affiliate programs that have worked for you? I think that’s the hard part ;-)

Hey Patti– Actually, I have been leery of Affiliate programs because I really did not understand much about them. Silly, I know… and there are certainly lots of sites that I can honestly recommend that would pay for those recommendations. I think that is what it comes down to–I want to check out the products really well before I tell people to use them.
Now that I have said all that—here is a site I do recommend for anyone who has some negative dings online–they do reputation repair.
